2019 Opportunities

We are welcoming volunteers to learn and build with us a 2 bedroom ‘Earthship inspired’  home on Vancouver island and to help develop our community gardens and learning centre. No prior building experience is required, an interest in natural building is.

We are looking for people willing to commit to three weeks or longer; kitchen lead and helpers, builders and/or garden helpers.

Delicious and nutritious food is key to a happy crew. We typically serve a wide range of food, including fresh veggies, meat, seafood, and eggs. Vegetarian option is available. Typically, we serve 8-10 people per day (Monday to Friday) for lunch, and provide support for dinner preparations. The kitchen is available on weekends for all volunteers to use.

Our Earthship building season is May to October. We accept volunteers throughout the year to help with the gardens and learning centre.

Other duties

Community Gardens

Garden layout is completed, volunteers help prepare and establish garden beds and community orchard.  There are a dozen fruit trees, 5 of 12 raised garden boxes have been built using waste wood from the sawmill. We are also establishing a giant sunflower growing space. Each of the petals will be a keyhole garden.

Sawmill: Our onsite portable sawmill is used to cut dimensional lumber for construction of outbuildings and theDoighouse.  Volunteer that wish to learn will have an opportunity to help Tony on the sawmill. There is a safety orientation. NOTE: The sawmill is not in operation if there is a risk of forest fire.

This is the sawmill we use to cut dimensional timber.

Chipping: Tree limbs under 4″ in diameter are chipped and piled for use in the community garden beds to be used as mulch or garden paths.  A wood chipper is on site and available to make this a easy cleanup job. Chipping can be done anytime there is a pile.  We also use the chipper to chip tree bark for forest trails and community garden paths.

Firewood:  Logs are ready and waiting to be sawed into 16″ lengths, split and stacked into cords.  We have a 25 tonne log splitter on-site to take the ‘hard work’ out of splitting.

Things to do (besides work)

All work and no play is no way to spend your life. There are so many things to do on Vancouver island, the local islands and in our area. Except for our 3 working bees, we take Saturday and Sunday off, so do our volunteers, so that we can rest, recharge and have time to play.
